Union downs Skidmore women in Liberty League opener

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Union College women's basketball team used a combined 12 three-pointers to run to a 77-57 Liberty League win over Skidmore College Tuesday evening at the Sports and Recreation Center.

The Dutchwomen, now 7-3 and 1-0 in conference play, will host Clarkson and St. Lawrence over the weekend.  The Thoroughbreds fall to 3-9 and 0-1 in the Liberty League.

A hard-fought first half found the Thoroughbreds climbing back from a 16-point deficit, 27-11, with 8:11 left in the half.  After junior Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) cut the lead to five with 2:05 to go, 29-24, freshman Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) hit a clutch three-pointer with 13 seconds in the half to put the score at 29-27 going into the intermission.

A hot-shooting Union squad came out ready in the second stanza, combining for nine three pointers in the half, led by four from senior Maria Tobin (Schenectady, N.Y.).  The Dutchwomen shot 18-29 (62.1 %) from the field and were 9-15 from behind the arc in the half as they cruised to the 77-57 victory.

Harper had another solid game for Skidmore, claiming her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while adding five assists.  Gaugler finished with 13 points and was 3-5 from three-point range.

Senior Michelle Rogers (Clarence, N.Y.) led Union with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Tobin finished with 17 points. 

Skidmore's Liberty League weekend begins with St. Lawrence on Friday, Jan. 16, starting at 6 p.m.
