Rob Hutchison

Rob Hutchison, a 2007 Skidmore graduate, enters his 11th season at the helm of the hockey program in 2025-26. Hutchison is the program's third varsity hockey coach since the team began ECAC play in 1983.

Hutchison's 204-25 team made it to the NEHC Semifinal for the fourth year in a row thanks to a 4-3 overtime win over Salve Regina University in the NEHC Quarterfinal at home. The Thoroughbreds wrapped the season with 14 wins overall and an 11-9 mark in the NEHC. Hutchison coached senior Danny Magnuson to the All-NEHC Second Team, Evan Brown to the All-NEHC Second Team/NEHC All-Rookie Team, and Will Dow-Kenny to the All-NEHC Third Team.

Skidmore's 2023-24 team was the most successful of Hutchison's tenure and tied for the second-most wins in a season (19) in program history. The Thoroughbreds tied for second in the NEHC with an 11-4-3 regular season conference record and earned the right to host a playoff game for the first time in over a decade. The Thoroughbreds beat UMass Boston (5-1) and Elmira College (4-1) on the way to reaching the conference title game for the second time in three years. Skidmore fell to back-to-back NCAA champion Hobart College in the league championship. Hutchison coached Skidmore's first First Team All-American in 2023-24 in Danny Magnuson '25 as well as AHCA Third Team All-American Tate Brandon. Brandon was also the NEHC Goaltender of the Year, and the two were joined on the All-NEHC Team by Kaeden Patrick '25.

The Thoroughbreds had back to back 16-win seasons in 2021-22 and 2022-23, which tied the program's benchmark dating back to the 1995-96 season. The 2022-23 squad reached the NEHC Semifinal for the second consecutive season, falling 1-0 to eventual league and NCAA champion Hobart College. Following the regular season, Kaeden Patrick '25 and Danny Magnuson '25 made the All-NEHC Third Team and Connor Wood '26 earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team as well as the USCHO All-Rookie Team.

Skidmore advanced to the NEHC Championship game in 2021-22 for the first time in program history after road playoff wins at UMass Boston and top-seeded Hobart. From the squad, Austin Rook '22 was named a College Sports Communicators Academic All-American and a Third Team All-NEHC honoree, where he was joined by classmate Reid Russell '22. Tate Brandon '24 and Will Dow-Kenny '25 made the All-Rookie Team, and Brandon was selected to the USCHO All-Rookie Team.

Skidmore enjoyed its best season in 10 years in 2018-19. The Thoroughbreds won 13 games and earned an upset win over NCAA national semifinalist Hobart in the regular season. Rookie Austin Rook was an All-NEHC Rookie and second team selection.

Hutchison made big strides in his second season, doubling Skidmore's win total (10) from his first season. The team earned a pair of upsets, defeating then- #2 UMass Boston 4-2 on the road and handing eventual NCAA National Champion Norwich its only loss of the season, a 3-2 overtime victory. The team broke into the USCHO.com and D3Hockey.com national polls, ranked as high as 14th and 15th, respectively.

Senior forwards Anthony Bird and Marc Cibelli, and freshman goaltender Brandon Kasel were All-NEHC selections in 2016-17.

A two-sport collegiate all-star, Hutchison was inducted into the Skidmore Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

The Waterville, N.Y. native was a three-sport prep standout during a post-graduate year at Trinity-Pawling.  While at Skidmore, Hutchison led both the baseball and ice hockey teams to post season play.

He was a two-year captain for the Thoroughbred hockey team, earning team MVP honors twice, three ECAC East All-Academic awards, and ECAC East Honorable Mention his senior season. He ranks 12th on the program's all-time scoring list with 44 goals and 53 assists for 97 points.

Hutchison led the baseball team to two Liberty League titles and two NCAA tournament berths. He was Liberty League All-Academic three times and his single-game seven stolen bases remains an NCAA Division III record.

Previously, Hutchison coached varsity boys hockey at Trinity-Pawling School from 2007 until he came back to Skidmore before the 2015-16 season.
