Skidmore College men’s basketball head coach Joe Burke has announced the return of Gerard O’Shea ’12 to the Skidmore sidelines as an assistant coach for the 2018-19 season. O’Shea will assist Burke in the Thoroughbred recruiting efforts, game planning, and player development.
O’Shea, the local Averill Park product, was stellar as a student-athlete for the Thoroughbreds. Serving as Burke’s first two-year captain, O’Shea led the Thoroughbreds to back-to-back Liberty League titles and NCAA appearances as a junior and senior, both program firsts.
Individually, he was named to the All-Liberty League First Team in both 2011 and 2012. In all, he played in 107 career games, scoring 963 points, while dishing out 438 assists and 244 steals, both program records at the time. He earned a B.A. in Business in 2012, returning to the sidelines as an assistant coach for the 2012-13 season. While on the sidelines, he helped mentor future NABC All-American Aldin Medunjanin, then a rookie.
He’s since pursued a professional career at MetLife, serving as a business analyst since 2013, while also coaching junior varsity and varsity basketball at his alma mater, Averill Park.
