BEVERLY, MA – The Skidmore College men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback on the road at Endicott on Friday evening.
In a match where scoring opportunities were difficult to come by, the Thoroughbreds (1-1) managed just two shots on goal despite dictating much of the possession and finishing with a 13-5 advantage in shots alongside a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. On the other side, the Gulls (1-0-1) capitalized on an own goal in the 16th minute for the game's only score despite finishing with just one shot on target.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Endicott took the lead on an own goal in the 16th minute after a string of quick passes led to a shot that got past a diving effort from junior goalkeeper Rowan McLear before a Skidmore defender attempted a goal-line clearance, but the ball deflected off him and into the net for a 1-0 Gulls advantage.
- Freshman Matias Sampedro registered the Thoroughbreds' first shot on goal in the 33rd minute, but his attempt was kept out.
- Looking for the equalizer early in the second half, freshman Luke Dougherty fired a strike toward the bottom-right corner in the 49th minute that was turned away by the Gulls' keeper.
- In the 74th minute, McLear recorded his lone save of the game on an Endicott shot that was sent bottom center, keeping the game within reach for the Thoroughbreds.
- Skidmore continued to apply pressure down the stretch, attempting six shots and generating three corner kicks over the final 18 minutes, but the Gulls' defense held firm to preserve the one-goal advantage.
