Skidmore comeback falls short in Liberty League opener at Clarkson

POTSDAM, NY – The Skidmore College women's soccer team's second-half comeback bid came up just short in a 3-2 loss at Clarkson in the Liberty League opener on Wednesday afternoon.

After the Thoroughbreds (1-2-1, 0-1 Liberty League) fell behind 3-0 in the 55th minute, senior Abby Lewis scored twice in a nine-minute span to pull Skidmore within one with 25 minutes remaining. Skidmore generated several quality chances for the equalizer down the stretch, but the Golden Knights (4-2, 1-0 Liberty League) held on behind a 10-save performance from goalkeeper Emma Fleming.

Skidmore outshot Clarkson 21-8, held a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal and generated six corner kicks to the Golden Knights' five.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Clarkson struck first in the 30th minute when Gabrielle Cyganik finished a feed from Thea Armistead, sending Skidmore into halftime facing a 1-0 deficit.
  • Kate Walsh doubled Clarkson's lead with an unassisted goal in the 50th minute before Emily LeBlanc finished a setup from Maddison Haver in the 55th to make it 3-0.
  • Skidmore responded one minute later when Lewis headed fellow senior Ellianna Caporusso's cross into the lower-right corner to cut the deficit to 3-1, with junior Alina Alcantara receiving the secondary assist.
  • In the 65th minute, sophomore Jillian Foley started the sequence with a pass to Caporusso, which resulted in a well-placed ball over the Clarkson back line to Lewis, who beat Fleming one-on-one for her second goal of the match, pulling Skidmore within 3-2.
  • In the 78th minute, freshman Avery Bush created space inside the box and fired toward goal, but Fleming made a leaping save to deny the potential equalizer.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Lewis' brace is the fourth of her career, and increases her career goals total to 18.
  • Caporusso finished with a pair of assists to improve to 18 in her career.
  • Alcantara's assist marks the second of her career.
  • Foley's assist is the first of her career.
