SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sophomore
Bryn Ryan's first career goal proved to be the game-winner as the Skidmore College women's soccer team defeated SUNY Oneonta, 1-0, in its home opener at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the narrow final margin, the Thoroughbreds (1-1-1) controlled much of the action, outshooting the Red Dragons (1-2-1) by a 15-6 tally and earning an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophia Sayers and freshman
Aila Chase combined for five saves to secure the shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Olivia Chandler placed Skidmore's first shot-on-goal in the 20th minute, on a curving shot from just outside the left side of the box.
- In the 26th minute, senior Abby Lewis collected the loose ball after the Oneonta goalkeeper broke up her initial through ball to Ryan inside the box, but her shot off the recovery rolled just wide left.
- Ryan broke through for the Thoroughbreds in the 32nd minute after senior Brooke Zienowicz's deep pass deflected off a Red Dragons defender and into her possession, allowing the sophomore to finish into an open net with the goalkeeper caught too far off her line.
- In the 44th minute, Ryan nearly completed a brace after getting on the receiving end of a pinpoint cross in front of the net, but her chip shot attempt sailed just high to strike the post.
- Heading into halftime, Sayers finished with three total saves.
- In the 55th minute, sophomore Mara Grace fired a shot from the left side off a corner that forced the Red Dragons goalkeeper into a diving save.
- Coming in to start the second half, Chase made a pair of saves in the 69th and 87th minutes to keep the Red Dragons off the board and complete the combined shutout.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Ryan finished with four shots alongside her first career goal.
- Chandler recorded four shots, with two being on goal.
- Sayers finished with three saves to earn her third career victory.
- Making her collegiate debut, Chase collected two saves.

The Thoroughbreds travel to Clarkson for the Liberty League opener on Wednesday. The game is set for a 4 PM start time.
