Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Big second half propels Thoroughbreds past Clarkson, 16-13

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY –The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team secured a key conference victory by taking down Clarkson 16-13 in a gritty, back-and-forth Stable Game battle at Wachenheim Field on Friday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (6-6, 2-3 Liberty League) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before withstanding a 6-1 second quarter from the Golden Knights (8-3, 3-2 Liberty League), as Skidmore responded by outscoring Clarkson 9-5 in the second half, including a 5-0 shutout in the third quarter and three unanswered goals in the fourth after the lead was briefly cut down to one.

Along with the win, junior Phoebe Ross recorded her 100th career point with a pair of assists, becoming the 31st player in program history to reach the milestone. In goal, sophomore Tatum Walsh tallied eight saves to earn her sixth career win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Skidmore started out fast by jumping out to a 4-0 lead at the 7:51 mark of the first quarter, as seniors Lily Hudner and Julia Cafasso both scored a pair of solo goals.
  • After the Golden Knights got on the board with 7:01 on the clock, junior Hannah Nash answered with a goal off the assist from freshman Lauren Hughey with 5:46 to go.
  • The Thoroughbreds closed out the first quarter by again answering a Clarkson goal, as senior Allison Brewer found the back of the net off the dish from Ross to give Skidmore a 6-2 lead heading into the second period.
  • It was all Clarkson in the second quarter, as the Golden Knights outscored Skidmore 6-1 in the frame to take an 8-7 lead into halftime. Clarkson's final three goals of the quarter all came on player-up opportunities, while Skidmore's lone tally came on a solo effort from Hudner at the 10:15 mark.
  • Seemingly on the wrong end of the game's momentum, the Thoroughbreds came out of halftime by flipping the script, shutting out the Golden Knights in a 5-0 third quarter to take a 12-8 lead.
  • Junior Charlotte Taylor opened the scoring for Skidmore at the 10:24 mark, followed by goals from sophomore Olivia Emerson, senior Allison Brewer, and Hughey in a one-minute stretch ending at 6:18. Brewer capped off the quarter with a player-up goal off a milestone-setting assist from Ross with just 50 seconds remaining in the quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Golden Knights scored three straight in the opening minutes to cut Skidmore's lead down to 12-11 with 10:23 on the clock.
  • However, that was as close as the comeback would get, as Skidmore responded with three unanswered goals from Hughey, Cafasso, and Hudner to push the lead back to four, 15-11, with 7:26 remaining.
  • Skidmore's final goal came on a solo effort from Taylor with 2:59 on the clock to essentially ice the game.
