Ron Plourde earned his 500
th coaching victory on Wednesday evening when the Thoroughbreds defeated host MCLA, 14-6, under the lights at Joe Wolfe Field.
- Plourde, one of 53 active coaches in Division III to reach the 500-win plateau, becomes Skidmore's second coach of any sport to 500 victories joining longtime volleyball coach Hilda Arrechea (552).
- Skidmore (17-12) scored at least once in innings 3-through-6 including a five-spot in the top of the fourth and three in the third.
- The Thoroughbreds shut out MCLA (8-21) through the first six innings and carried an 11-0 lead into the seventh.
- Alex Tavano, the starter, earned the win in the pre-determined pitching situation. He struck out three over two innings.
- Colby Bohnen tossed the next two innings, and Lucas Meinelt followed. Meinelt recorded four out of his six outs via the strikeout. Skidmore pitcher struck out 12 Trailblazer hitters.
- Jack Riva went 4-for-6 at the plate for Skidmore with a double, triple, three RBI, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Riva was a home run short of the cycle.
- Skidmore stole six bases. Eddie Galvao and Mac Cady both had two.
- The Thoroughbreds also had seven extra-base hits, including three tiples. Riva, Galvao, and Luke Warzynski each had a three-bagger.
- Galvao reached three times. He was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.
- Quinn McDonald went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs, while Stefanelli finished 2-for-2 with a walk, double, and RBI in addition to the stolen base.
- Dariel Rodriguez had a pair of hits and two RBI for the Trailblazers.
- After three in the third, including an RBI Riva triple, Skidmore scored five runs on five hits in the fourth highlighted by Riva's two-run double. The Thoroughbreds made it 11-0 with unearned runs in the fifth and sixth.
- MCLA extended the contest with three runs on three hits and two walks in the seventh and kept the game going again in the bottom of the eighth with another three runs after Skidmore took a 14-3 lead in the top of the inning.
- Will Markwood worked around a walk and hit batter in the ninth to close it out.
