SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The No. 15 Skidmore College men's lacrosse team fell just short in a nationally-ranked Senior Day matchup against No. 19 St. Lawrence, 11-10, at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds (10-4, 3-3 Liberty League) fell behind in a 3-0 hole through the first quarter, but rallied back to tie the game in the second period before trading blows with the Saints throughout the second half. However, the Saints (10-5, 4-2 Liberty League) capitalized on key man-up opportunities and timely late goals to hold off for the win down the stretch.
For the game, Skidmore outshot St. Lawrence 46-36 and forced 16 turnovers. However, 16 saves and an efficient 3-for-4 execution on extra-man opportunities proved to be the difference for the Saints.
Following the game, the program honored its eight members of the Class of 2026 during Senior Day celebrations:
Caleb Lawson,
Will Fekete,
David Koffler,
Andrew Meindl,
Jason Fastiggi,
Ethan Pham,
Jude Avelino Jr., and
Marty McFadden.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was all Saints in the first quarter, as the visitors held Skidmore scoreless while netting three goals to build a 3-0 lead.
- Lawson broke through early in the second quarter with a solo goal at the 12:00 mark to cut the deficit to 3-1.
- After St. Lawrence answered to push the lead back to three, the Thoroughbreds responded with three straight goals from juniors Remy Poisson and Jonathan Byrne, and sophomore Michael Aiello to tie the game at 4-4 with 6:20 remaining in the half.
- The Saints regained control with back-to-back goals to take the lead with 4:52 on the clock, before Koffler answered at the 2:31 mark for Skidmore's lone goal in the closing stretch.
- However, a two-minute Skidmore major penalty in the final minute proved costly, as St. Lawrence capitalized with a man-up goal with eight seconds remaining to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
- With the penalty carrying over, the Saints struck again on the man-up in the opening 50 seconds of the third quarter to extend the lead to 8-5.
- Following the goal, junior Jake Weiner scored twice for Skidmore in the third, but St. Lawrence matched with two more goals of its own to maintain a 10-7 advantage entering the fourth.
- Skidmore cut the deficit to one with consecutive goals from Lawson and freshman Joseph Killcommons to make it 10-9 with 9:31 to go.
- However, the offense stalled soon after, and following a Saints goal at the 5:01 mark that restored a two-goal lead, Skidmore did not score again until Weiner found the net off an assist from Meindl with 19 seconds remaining to make it 11-10.
- Despite losing the ensuing faceoff, the Thoroughbreds forced a turnover in the final seconds and got off a last-second shot from midfield that went wide.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Weiner led with three goals and one assist to go alongside three groundballs.
- Aiello tallied one goal, two assists and a pair of groundballs.
- Lawson scored twice with one groundball and one caused turnover.
- Avelino Jr. and McFadden both led the defense with a pair of caused turnovers each.
