Skidmore beats Vassar, 9-2, in series opener

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Quinn Hocom, one of the leading strikeout pitchers in the nation, fanned nine over seven innings, EJ Stefanelli drove in four, and Eddie Galvao and Jack Collins both had three hits as the Skidmore College baseball team opened its weekend Liberty League series against Vassar with a 9-2 victory.
  • The Thoroughbreds had a 5-2 lead in the eighth when it scored four insurance markers and reliever Grayden Harris got through the last two innings unscathed for the 9-2 final.
  • Skidmore is 16-10 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League East. Skidmore can clinch a spot in the Liberty League Crossover weekend as soon as Saturday.
  • Vassar is 9-16 and 3-7 in the division.
  • Hocom allowed nine hits over his seven strong innings, but stranded four runners over the first two innings before settling in by retiring eight in a row into the fifth. He issued a pair of walks and improved to 6-0.
  • Skidmore led from the third batter of the game on. Eddie Galvao, who later recorded his 100th-career hit, doubled with one out in the opening frame and scored on a Collins opposite-field single.
  • Jack Riva tripled to lead off the second and scored to make it 2-0 on a Stefanelli sacrifice fly.
  • The Brewers got one back on the strength of three singles in the bottom of the second, but Mac Cady singled in Quinn McDonald, who got hit by a pitch to lead off the third, with one out in the third to get the two-run lead right back.
  • Stefanelli picked up his second RBI in the fifth, when he hit a double to left to score Holden Caney, who singled, from first.
  • Skidmore appeared to make it 5-1 in the top of the sixth on another Collins single to left, but the runner at home was called out via interference after deliberation.
  • Skidmore eventually did make it 5-1 an inning later. With runners at second and third, Nate Vandersea hustled out an infield single.
  • A leadoff single followed by a balk, wild pitch, and ground out was the formula for Vassar's only other run in the seventh off Hocom.
  • After the Brewers recorded the first out in the eighth, the next six Skidmore hitters reached on two walks, a hit batter, and hits by Galvao, Collins, and Stefanelli. Stefanelli's knock through the left side scored a pair.
  • Vassar starter Grant Maryott allowed four runs on nine this over six innings. He struck out six and walked two. Three Brewer relievers walked five and hit a pair of batters over the final three innings.
