ITHACA, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team defeated host Ithaca, 7-6, in the second game of a road doubleheader on Sunday to earn a Liberty League split against the Bombers.
Game 1 – Ithaca 6, Skidmore 0
- Two Bomber pitchers limited Skidmore to just three hits and three walks with only three runners in scoring position all game.
- Two of the Skidmore hits came in the fourth, when Lulu Mickle singled and stole second and Natalie Mayne singled in the infield. A double play helped Ithaca get out of it.
- The other Thoroughbred hit was in the first, when Mayne doubled with two outs to right-center.
- Madison Schoenenberger homered and doubled, and had three hits, to lead Ithaca. Shooenenberger and Sydney Miranda hit back-to-back homers in the fifth.
- The Bombers scored one in the first and not again until they added two in the fourth when the first three batters recorded hits and three in the fifth highlighted by the homers.
- Mady Rowell pitched the first five innings for Ithaca, earning the win, before giving way to Maddie Collins for the final two innings.
- Mallory Allen scattered four hits and five runs, four earned, for Skidmore. She did not record a strikeout but walked only one. Shayne Cleeve tossed the last two innings for the Thoroughbreds.
Game 2 – Skidmore 7, Ithaca 6
- Skidmore pounced to an early 6-0 lead after scoring a run in the first and then five in the second.
- Sophia Finch came through with a two-out, RBI single to score Mickle, who doubled, to open the scoring.
- Then, Skidmore rallied for five runs on four hits in the second that featured a two-run Sam Waters double and two more RBI for Finch on another single up the middle.
- The Thoroughbreds left runners on in the third, fourth and fifth, but managed to stretch the lead to seven in the fifth when Mayne singled in Elle Harrison from third.
- The Bombers then scored the game's final six runs, but Shayne Cleeve came in for a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning for the save and close it out.
- Miran and Kailen Winke drove in the first two Bomber runs in the seventh before the hosts rattled off four in the sixth to cut the deficit to one. Cleeve came in with two outs in the sixth after Schoenenberger hit her second homer of the day. Cleeve walked the first batter she faced and threw a wild pitch to move the tying run to second, but she induced a ground out to get out of it.
- Mayne started and was untouched until the sixth for her fourth win of the year.
- Finch finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Mayne reached three times on a 1-for-2 game with two walked and two driven in. Waters also drove in a pair. She was 2-for-5.
