No. 7 Tigers pull away from No. 18 Thoroughbreds in fourth quarter

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The No. 18 Skidmore College men's lacrosse team fell 12-6 in a nationally-ranked matchup against No. 7 RIT at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (7-2, 1-1 Liberty League) battled through the first three quarters, keeping pace with the Tigers (10-2, 2-0 Liberty League) through a combination of terrific defensive playmaking and timely goals in a low-scoring affair. However, RIT pulled away in the fourth quarter, scoring four unanswered goals to secure the win.

For the game, the goalie duo of sophomore Marc Gadbois and freshman Olivier Yuk combined for 16 saves, anchoring another terrific Skidmore defensive showing that forced 26 turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • RIT jumped out to an early lead following a pair of solo scores to make it 2-0 with 8:35 to go in the first period.
  • The Thoroughbreds closed out the quarter with three unanswered, as freshman Joseph Killcommons, senior David Koffler, and sophomore Michael Aiello all found the back of the net to put Skidmore up 3-2 through the first 15 minutes of play.
  • The Tigers swung the game in the second quarter, stringing together four consecutive goals to double up Skidmore, 6-3, with 5:13 left in the half.
  • Killcommons closed out the half strong for the Thoroughbreds, scoring a man-up goal off the assist from fellow first-year Ollie Rice to make it a 6-4 deficit with 3:21 to go.
  • In a back-and-forth third quarter, the Tigers extended their lead to three following a goal at the 9:47 mark, before senior Caleb Lawson responded off the assist from Aiello with 7:16 on the clock.
  • RIT would again find the back of the net at the 3:29 mark, before Aiello closed out the quarter with a solo goal with just three ticks remaining to make it an 8-6 game entering the final period.
  • It was all Tigers in the fourth, as RIT pulled away with four unanswered goals while Skidmore was unable to score in the final 15 minutes of play.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Aiello finished with two goals and two assists.
  • Killcommons recorded his seventh multi-goal game of his freshman season, finishing with two.
  • Senior Jude Avelino Jr. led the team with eight groundballs and five caused turnovers.
  • Junior Ethan Dicturel tallied three caused turnovers wit hfour groundballs.
