GENEVA, NY – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team lost 18-6 on the road at No. 9 William Smith to kick off Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds (4-2, 1-1 Liberty League) stayed within striking distance through much of the first half before an extended scoring run allowed the Herons (5-0, 1-0 Liberty League) to pull away. For the game, William Smith held a decisive advantage on draw controls, 18-8, and outshot Skidmore 43-15.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Herons jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Skidmore got on the board off the stick of senior Lily Hudner on a player-down situation with 8:32 remaining in the first quarter.
- William Smith answered moments later with two goals in an 18-second span to extend the lead to 5-1 with 8:00 left in the period.
- Skidmore's second goal of the quarter came from sophomore Hillary Noble, who finished an assist from junior Charlotte Taylor with 6:03 remaining, before the Herons added a late goal with 31 seconds left to take a 6-2 advantage after one.
- Both teams traded two goals in the opening ten minutes of the second quarter, as sophomore Olivia Emerson and Taylor scored for Skidmore to make it an 8-4 William Smith lead with 5:37 on the clock.
- William Smith then took control, stringing together 10 unanswered goals on a run that stretched into the fourth quarter to build an 18-5 lead with 8:41 remaining.
- The Thoroughbreds closed the game with the final two goals of the fourth quarter, as Emerson and freshman Ella Koosis each scored in solo fashion.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- In goal, sophomore Tatum Walsh tallied a career-best 15 saves.
- Emerson led the team with a pair of goals.
- Hudner finished with one goal, one assist and one caused turnover.
- Taylor recorded one goal with one assist.
