Lawson nets go-ahead goal to propel Thoroughbreds past MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Senior Caleb Lawson scored the clutch go-ahead goal with 1:55 remaining as the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team held off a late fourth quarter rally to defeat MIT, 14-11, in the road opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (2-0) started fast, building a 10-3 lead midway through the third quarter and appearing poised to pull away. However, a valiant 8-1 surge from the Engineers (0-1) tied the game late in the fourth quarter before Lawson delivered the go-ahead goal in the final minutes.

On the day, Skidmore capitalized on its man-up opportunities, converting 4-of-5, to overcome disadvantages on clears (16-of-22 compared to MIT's 20-of-21) and faceoffs (11-16). At goal, sophomore Marc Gadbois recorded 10 saves for his second win on the season and fourth of his career.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds came out strong, building a 4-1 lead after the first quarter behind goals from senior David Koffler, sophomore Michael Aiello, sophomore Charlie Schutta and freshman Joseph Killcommons.
  • After MIT opened the second quarter with a goal, Skidmore closed the first half on a 3-1 run behind a pair of Aiello goals and a Conor Geier strike to take a 7-3 lead into intermission.
  • Coming out of halftime, Skidmore jumped out to a 10-3 lead at the 8:05 mark after a man-up goal from Killcommons and scores from Koffler and junior Jonathan Byrne.
  • The Engineers responded with a 5-0 run that stretched into the fourth period, as MIT cut the Thoroughbreds lead down to 10-8 with 10:28 to go in the final quarter.
  • After a William Swezey goal off the dish from Aiello temporarily stopped the momentum and pulled Skidmore up 11-8, MIT followed up with three-consecutive scores to come all the way back to tie the game at 11-11 with 5:53 remaining in regulation.
  • A couple scoreless minutes later, Lawson stepped up with the solo go-ahead goal to put the Thoroughbreds ahead, 12-11, with 1:55 on the clock. Skidmore followed up with two consecutive faceoff wins from freshman Ander Berman that was capitalized by goals from Aiello and Koffler to seal the road opener win.
