CASTLETON, VT – The Skidmore College men's soccer team closed out nonconference play with a dominant 2-0 road win over Castleton on Tuesday evening.
With several key starters resting, the Thoroughbreds (4-4-3) received goals from first-years
Matias Sampedro and
Keegan Maxwell and doubled up the Spartans (2-7-2) in shot attempts, 22-11.
Making his collegiate debut in goal, freshman
Dante Fierro made five saves to earn the shutout victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Jed Dougherty delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, where sophomore Evan Riccelli headed the ball toward Maxwell, who shot it past the keeper to put the Thoroughbreds ahead 1-0 in the 15th minute.
- Fierro was tested in the 20th minute and made his first collegiate save, then came up with consecutive saves in the 22nd and 23rd minutes to keep the Spartans off the board.
- At halftime, Skidmore had outshot Castleton 13-5, while the Spartans held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
- Looking for an insurance goal, the Thoroughbreds came out firing in the second half, putting four shots on goal in the first 14 minutes that were all turned away by Castleton's keeper.
- Skidmore finally broke through again in the 72nd minute when Maxwell connected with Sampedro, who fired a shot from just outside the box past the diving keeper and into the back left side of the net.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Maxwell scored his second career goal and dished out his first assist.
- Sampedro scored his first career goal.
- Riccelli recorded his first career assist.
- J. Dougherty tallied his first assist of the season, and third of his career.
- Making his first career start, junior Josh Mair played all 90 minutes in the Skidmore backline.
