Thoroughbreds battle late but fall 51-47 at RPI

TROY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team settled for a Liberty League weekend split following a 51-47 setback at Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.
  • Skidmore (3-8, 1-3 Liberty League) outscored the hosts 13-8 in the fourth quarter but was unable to overcome a nine-point RPI advantage, despite pulling within two with three seconds remaining.
  • The Thoroughbreds went the final 7:41 without a field goal but went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and limited the Engineers to just two points during that stretch to cut the deficit to three.
  • Sophia Martinez went 1-for-2 at the line with three seconds left to make it 49-47. Skidmore fouled three times in quick succession, but RPI's Sydney Blaney converted both free throws to seal the outcome.
  • Rensselaer (9-4, 4-2 Liberty League) turned a one-point halftime deficit into a nine-point cushion by outscoring Skidmore 16-6 in the third quarter.
  • Martinez led the Thoroughbreds with 10 points.
  • Claudia Schneider scored eight points and registered a team-high three steals.
  • Audrey Bowen grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go with six points and two steals.
  • Sara Hastie added eight points, four assists, two steals, and a block.
  • Ruby Krop recorded four blocks.
  • Siena Smith paced RPI with 11 points, eight rebounds, and five steals.
  • Tyler Hormazabal contributed nine points along with three steals and three rebounds.
  • The contest featured 11 lead changes and eight ties. Skidmore shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the field and 1-of-6 from 3-point range, while the Engineers finished at 32.3 percent (20-of-62) overall and 5-of-25 from beyond the arc.
