SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Senior
Connor Mansfield and sophomore
Dylan Moore scored in quick succession to lift the Skidmore College men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout win over St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
Picking up the first conference win of the season, the Thoroughbreds (4-1-3, 1-0-1 Liberty League) scored twice within a 90-second stretch early in the first half and made enough plays defensively the rest of the game to defeat the Saints (2-6, 0-2 Liberty League) for the first time since 2016.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 18th minute, senior Tobias Catizone lofted a pinpoint ball from beyond midfield to a cutting Mansfield well inside the final third, who dribbled past two St. Lawrence defenders before firing a strike beyond the Saints' goalkeeper to open the scoring.
- Skidmore doubled its lead just a minute later, in the 19th, when freshman Quinn McInerney first broke free and weaved through the St. Lawrence backline before testing the Saints' goalkeeper. The save deflected straight to Moore in front of the goal, and he calmly shot the rebound past the keeper and a defender to make it 2-0.
- The Saints nearly cut the Skidmore lead in half in the 78th minute when a perfectly-placed corner kick found Baker Diaz for an uncontested header, but senior Dillon Moore made the team save with a terrific play at the net.
- After coming in relief just nine minutes into the match, freshman David Zampese made an immediate impact in his collegiate debut by making key saves and intercepting St. Lawrence crosses throughout the match.
