SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College men's soccer team wrapped up nonconference play with a commanding 3-0 shutout victory over VTSU Castleton at Wachenheim Field on Tuesday evening.
The Thoroughbreds (5-1-3) were led by a first-half brace from senior
Tobias Catizone alongside another score from sophomore
Dylan Moore to overwhelm the Spartans (4-6), who were blanked by a combined shutout from freshman
David Zampese and sophomore
Rowan McLear. Overall, Skidmore outshot Castleton by a staggering 30-to-4 margin with an 8-to-1 edge in corner kicks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tobias first struck in the 14th minute after receiving a well-placed cross from fellow senior Cole Rogan to put the Thoroughbreds up 1-0.
- In the 30th minute, Tobias delivered once again after scoring off the rebound of an initial Simon Failla shot attempt that deflected off Castleton goalie Xander Berthiaume.
- Entering halftime, Skidmore held a commanding 15-to-2 advantage in shot attempts.
- The Thoroughbreds rounded out a dominant offensive display in the 52nd minute when junior Colin Goodhines connected with a trailing Moore in transition for a chip shot shoot and score directly in front of the net. Sophomore Kyle Girouard set up the scoring sequence with the initial hit ahead pass to Goodhines.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Zampese picked up his second career win with one save in the first half, while McLear completed the shutout with a one-save second half performance of his own.
- Catizone recorded his first career brace to improve to four goals on the season and 10 in his career.
- Moore's goal is his third on the season.
- Rogan's assist marks his first on the season and fifth as a Thoroughbred.
- Goodhine's assist is his second on the season and fourth of his career.
- Girouard's assist is the second of his career.
