Miller, Thoroughbreds play Union to draw in Liberty League opener

SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshman Nick Miller scored the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute, but an 87th minute equalizer forced the Skidmore College men's soccer team into a 1-1 tie with Union to kick off Liberty League play on the road Tuesday evening.

In a game where the Thoroughbreds (3-1-3, 0-0-1 Liberty League) held a 13–4 shots advantage and struck first with a late goal, the Garnet Chargers (2-3-2, 0-0-1 Liberty League) ultimately capitalized on a perfectly executed equalizer in the final moments to force a draw.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds outshot the Garnet Chargers by a 6-to-1 margin in a scoreless first half of play as Skidmore commanded possession and the flow of the game.
  • Coming out of intermission, it was Union that looked to break the tie as Kofi Sarfoh launched a 52nd minute shot that was stopped by senior goalie Will Devall.
  • Taking advantage of a 74th minute throw-in on the final third, junior Colin Goodhines made the initial pass to set up a terrific give-and-go sequence between sophomore Kyle Girouard and Miller, which broke through the Garnet Chargers backline for the go-ahead score.
  • Union answered with the 87th minute equalizer after Luke Ingber navigated through a crowded Thoroughbred backline before connecting with Sarfoh for the point-blank goal.
  • Skidmore looked to quickly respond in the final minutes by creating a pair of successive attacking chances from senior Carter Capodanno and Goodhines, but saves from Union goalie Jacob Perry halted both opportunities.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Miller's goal is his first collegiate score.
  • Girouard's assist marks his first as a Thoroughbred.
  • Goodhine's assist is his second this season and fourth of his career.
