Grace, Lewis score in 2-1 Skidmore victory over Gordon

WENHAM, MA – The Skidmore College women's soccer team scored early and held on late to take down Gordon College, 2-1, on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (2-2-2) struck first midway in the first half on a breakaway goal from junior Abby Lewis, before freshman Mara Grace tacked on a much-needed insurance goal early in the second half to help hold off a late-game comeback bid from the Fighting Scots (2-5), in a game that Skidmore held a substantial 17-to-4 advantage in shots attempted.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Skidmore broke through in the 23rd minute after junior Hazel Aiello delivered a pinpoint through ball to Lewis, who outran the Gordon backline to track down the ball before dribbling past the Fighting Scots' goalie for the uncontested goal.
  • Coming out of halftime, in the 49th minute, the Thoroughbreds tacked on the insurance goal on a give-and-go sequence between Grace and senior Madison Hallet that resulted in the freshman beating her defender before shooting the ball past the Gordon goalie and into the bottom left side of the net.
  • Gordon cut the Skidmore lead in half in the 76th minute when Lily Harper connected on an opportunistic shot attempt after Thoroughbreds goalie Sophia Sayers fell out of position while making a diving stop on an initial Fighting Scots corner kick.
  • After a first half that saw Skidmore hold a narrow 7-to-5 advantage in shots, the Thoroughbreds turned up the pressure by outshooting the Fighting Scots by a staggering 10-to-2 margin in the second half of play.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Lewis' goal is her third on the year and tenth as a Thoroughbred.
  • Grace's score is her second on the season.
  • Aiello's assist marks her first on the season and fourth of her career.
  • Hallet's assist is the first of her career.
  • Senior Avery Rogers recorded a pair of saves in a shutout bid through the first 70:24 of the match before being subbed out.

The Thoroughbreds kick off Liberty League play at home next Wednesday against Clarkson. The start time at Wachenheim Field is set for 4 PM.
