Four goal scorers lead Thoroughbreds in shutout win at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – Four players scored as the Skidmore College field hockey team defeated host Utica University, 4-0, on Tuesday in a non-league game at Utica's ABM Field at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Skidmore scored 7.5 minutes in with two more in the third period and one in the fourth.
  • Ella Costa, Gianna DiGioacchino, Emma Houff, and Auriel Gonzalez were the goal scorers for Skidmore (4-2). It was Houff's second goal of the year, and the first for the rest of the scorers. Nine players have goals for Skidmore through six games.
  • Nicole Sylvestri made six saves and gave way to Allison Morgan late for the combined shutout.
  • Costa, Erin Ohlenbusch and Margaret Heim had assists.
  • Costa opened the scoring at the 7:37 mark on a feed from Ohlenbusch. The Thoroughbreds' goal came after Utica (0-4) controlled the early stages with the first four shots. Sylvestri helped weather the storm with three early saves.
  • Utica made another offensive push to start the second quarter before Skidmore gained control right back and held it the rest of the way. The Thoroughbreds managed four penalty corners over the latter half of the second stanza, but were unable to extend the 1-0 lead despite steady pressure.
  • The dam broke in the middle of the third, when DiGioacchino scored from Costa at the 37:05 mark, and Houff stretched the Skidmore lead to three just over a minute later with a penalty stroke.
  • Gonzalez completed the scoring with 7:49 left on a corner sequence. Heim assisted.
  • Skidmore finished with a 28-10 edge in shots with a 21-7 margin in shots on goal.
  • Skidmore also had a massive 30-5 advantage in penalty corners.
  • Ismiah ChinQuee made 16 saves for the Pioneers.
  • It was the second game in a row and third time this season that Skidmore has scored at least four goals.
  • Skidmore also beat Utica 4-0 last year and has now defeated the Pioneers six times in a row and nine out of the last 10.
