Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Skidmore fends off two-set deficit for massive comeback win over Misericordia

SWARTHMORE, Pa. — The Skidmore College volleyball team fell behind two-sets-to-none, and were within two points of getting swept, but bounced back and completed a dramatic comeback over Misericordia with a dominant fifth set. Skidmore was later swept by host Swarthmore to complete the first of two days at Swarthmore's Phoenix Invitational.

Match 1 – Skidmore 3, Misericordia 2 (18-25, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 15-3)
  • Senior outside hitter Maya Stolarz hammered 13 kills and three blocks to lead Skidmore to the five-set comeback win.
  • Jazlin Chen finished with 10 kills, a block, and a .391 hitting percentage.
  • Catriona Hoekperl put together a double-double on 22 digs and 20 assists. She also had an ace.
  • Marlowe McIntyre and Emma Ferrigno shared the team high with four aces apiece. McIntyre also had 24 digs to lead all players. Ferrigno added 13 assists and a kill.
  • Chloe Heitman chipped in with six kills to go with 12 digs.
  • Madison Tullo led Misericordia with 12 kills and a block.
  • Misericordia pulled away mid-way through the opening set for the lead.
  • The Cougars employed a 7-2 run in the middle of the second set to build a big enough cushion to withstand a late Thoroughbred push.
  • Skidmore rode the momentum into the third. A fast Thoroughbred start gave way to a back-and-forth middle part of the set. The Cougars led 23-21, and were two points away from a sweep, when Skidmore rattled off the final four points in a row started by a Stolarz kill and ending with a McIntyre ace.
  • Misericordia scored 6-of-7 as part of an 11-3 run in the fourth to take a 17-12 lead. Skidmore, on Ferrigno's serve, scored the next five to tie it up. Misericordia later led 22-20, but two Madison Manning kills in a row followed by a Cougar error gave Skidmore a brief 23-22 lead. The Thoroughbreds then had set points at 24-23 and 25-24 before finally putting it away on a Chen kill. Despite the back-and-forth, Misericordia never had a match point.
  • The fifth set was all Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds rolled off nine unanswered points on two McIntyre aces, kills from three different players, and four Cougar errors. The match ended four points later on consecutive Misericordia hitting errors.
Match 2 – Swarthmore 3, Skidmore 0 (19-25, 20-25, 18-25)
  • Chen led Skidmore with seven kills and three blocks.
  • Stolarz finished with six kills and two blocks, while McIntyre tallied 15 more digs.
  • Ferrigno added three more service aces to go with nine assists and eight digs.
  • Isabel Adam had 14 kills for the Garnet to lead the way in the win.
  • The hosts pulled ahead in the first on the strength of a 6-1 run breaking a 7-all early deadlock.
  • Skidmore tried to play catch-up in the second, but a nine-point deficit (22-13) was too high a hill to climb despite scoring six in a row cutting the deficit to just three.
  • Swarthmore rallied for 9-of-10 points in the third set on the way to the sweep.
