SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – In a scrappy back-and-forth matchup, the Skidmore College men's soccer team overcame a halftime deficit to force a 2-2 tie with Plattsburgh State to conclude a doubleheader at Wachenheim Field on Wednesday evening.
The Thoroughbreds (1-1-2) took the first lead in the 27
th minute on a goal from senior
Tobias Catizone, before the Cardinals (3-0-2) struck twice in the closing minutes of the first half to take the lead into intermission. Junior
Colin Goodhines wrapped up the scoring with the equalizing goal in the 49
th minute of an evenly contested match that saw Skidmore hold a narrow 12-to-11 shots advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A header from Catizone found the back of the net off one bounce from senior Dillon Nelson in the 27th minute to give the Thoroughbreds the 1-0 lead. Freshman Jacob Humienny set up the scoring sequence with a brilliant cross from the left side to initially connect with Nelson.
- The Cardinals tied the match at 1-1 in the 40th minute after a bad Thoroughbreds pass in the defensive third resulted in a transition score from Robbie Kapovic.
- Plattsburgh took the lead with just 36 seconds left in the half after a solo score from Jake McGowan put the road team up entering halftime.
- Coming out of intermission, Goodhines relentlessly scored the equalizer in the 49th minute on a rebound shot after his initial shot attempt was blocked.
- With the game once again tied early in the second half, the rest of the match saw a chippy battle in which eight yellow cards and one red card were handed out, before ultimately both defenses holding off attacking chances to force the tie.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Catizone's goal marks his second of the season and eighth of his career.
- Goodhine's goal was his 11th as a Thoroughbred.
- Humienny recorded his first career assist and point as a Thoroughbred.
- Nelson's assist marks the third of his collegiate career.
