Thoroughbreds tie Oneonta, 1-1, in road opener

ONEONTA, NY – The Skidmore College men's soccer team battled SUNY Oneonta in a competitive 1-1 tie on the road Monday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (1-0-1) struck first via an own goal from the home team on a Colin Goodhines crosser in the 27th minute of the first half, before the Red Dragons (1-0-1) notched the equalizer in the 59th minute coming out of halftime to ultimately force the tie.

In an overall impressive defensive display, a swarming Thoroughbreds backline and aggressive midfield play alongside stellar goalkeeping from senior Will Devall, who recorded five saves that included highlight worthy stops, limited Oneonta to just nine shots on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds broke through the Red Dragons defense in the 27th minute when a Goodhines crosser inside the box was intercepted and deflected off the foot of an Oneonta defender inadvertently into the back of the net, putting Skidmore up 1-0.
  • Following the goal, Devall kept the Oneonta offense at bay with multiple key saves in the rest of the first half that included a heads-up swat away on a transition shot attempt in the 43rd minute and a leaping save on a free kick with 20 seconds remaining in the half.
  • Coming out of halftime, Devall stopped another quality Oneonta shot attempt from inside the box in the 53rd minute off a well-placed throw in chance.
  • Seconds later, the Thoroughbreds nearly turned the stop into an insurance goal on the other end by flipping the field for a Goodhines shot attempt that was deflected on a diving save from the Red Dragons goalie.
  • In the 59th minute, Oneonta scored the equalizer after a crosser broke through the Skidmore backlines for a chip shot goal by Luigi Prosperi from the right side.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Devall finished with five saves on the day.
  • Senior Tobias Catizone finished with a team-high four shots, with three being placed on goal.
  • Goodhines and freshman Jacob Humienny both recorded two shots, with one on goal.
