SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College women's soccer team kicked off the 2025 season with a hard-fought 1-1 tie against SUNY Brockport at Wachenheim Field on Friday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds (0-0-1) struck first early after juniors
Abby Lewis connected with
Alexandra Verna in the 12th minute, before the Golden Eagles (0-0-1) responded late in the first half with the equalizer in the 36th. In a scoreless second half, Senior goalie
Avery Rogers made four key saves, including the 100th of her career, to keep Brockport off the board.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Maya Grace set up the Thoroughbreds' lone score early in the first half after driving the ball down the offensive third to find a cutting Lewis, who immediately tapped the ball to Verna on the right side of the net for the shoot and score.
- The Golden Eagles converted on the equalizer after a cross from Lavanya Upadhyay found Lucy Crounse in the center of the box for a shot attempt that just snuck past the leaping efforts of Rogers, who managed to initially get a piece of the ball, sending the game into a 1-1 tie at halftime.
- Both teams strung together scoring opportunities for the go-ahead goal in the second half, with Skidmore generating five shots with one corner, while the Golden Eagles put up six attempts with three corners.
- Stellar second half goalkeeping from Rogers kept Brockport off the board, as the senior made four key saves that included a diving effort in the 76th minute.
