Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Thoroughbreds fall at SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY – The Skidmore College women's soccer team fell in the road opener to SUNY Oneonta, 1-0, to kick off the weekend road trip on Saturday afternoon.

Despite holding a 12-to-5 shots advantage, the Thoroughbreds (0-1-1) ultimately couldn't overcome an early second half score from the Red Dragons (1-1-1) and stellar goalkeeping from Oneonta's Bryanna Meehan, who saved numerous quality shots on net by the Thoroughbreds throughout the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a scoreless first half of play, both teams combined for just four shots and four corners. The lone shot-on-goal for the Thoroughbreds came in the 25th minute on an Abby Lewis header in transition that was saved by Meehan.
  • Skidmore made a goalie change at halftime with sophomore Sophia Sayers taking over for senior Avery Rogers, who recorded one save in the first 45 minutes of action.
  • Coming out of intermission on the offensive, the Red Dragons strung together four consecutive corners alongside a pair of shots in the opening minutes before finally breaking through the Skidmore defense in the 51st minute after a pinpoint cross by Gianna Hanner set up a well-timed header from Reilly Landisi towards the bottom right side of the net to put Oneonta up 1-0.
  • The Thoroughbreds nearly struck the equalizer in the 60th after a perfect pass in transition from junior Elliana Caporusso connected with Alexandra Verna in a one-on-one situation well inside the penalty box, but a diving save from Meehan ended the scoring opportunity.
  • The near goal marked the first of multiple high-quality equalizer chances for Skidmore the rest of the first, with freshman Mara Grace nearly tying the game in the 61st after splitting a pair of defenders for a shot attempt shut down at the net by Meehan.
  • Further attempts saw freshmen Bryn Ryan and Jillian Foley place shots-on-goal in the 69th and 86th minutes, respectively.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Lewis led the offense with three shots, two being placed on goal.
