SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Competing under the pouring rain, the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a dynamic Union offensive attack before falling 19-11 at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.
Led by four early combined goals from
Lily Hudner and
Jillian Lockwood, the Thoroughbreds (5-7, 2-4 Liberty League) matched Union's intensity out the gates in a high-scoring first quarter that saw the Garnet Chargers (7-3, 3-3 Liberty League) take a narrow two-goal lead. However, a notable disadvantage on draw controls and costly turnovers on clears as the match progressed proved too much to overcome as the Union offense held a lopsided possessions advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a high-scoring first quarter that saw scoring runs from both teams, Union was the first to strike on consecutive goals in quick succession to lead 2-0 at the 11:50 mark.
- The Thoroughbreds responded with a trio of unanswered scores, with Lockwood striking twice alongside another goal from fellow senior Lily Schwartzman, to lead 3-2 with 7:25 on the clock.
- Both teams continued the scoring affair by trading goals, with Hudner striking twice for Skidmore with a pair of solo goals, countering three Union scores to make the game a 5-5 tie with 2:05 to go.
- The Garnet Chargers closed out the quarter strong, first with a man-up goal at the 1:26 mark before scoring a second goal with 29 seconds left to give the road team a 7-5 lead after one period of play.
- Skidmore began the second quarter with a quick score from junior Julia Cafasso, off the assist from sophomore Phoebe Ross, to cut the deficit down to one goal just 15 seconds into the period.
- However, it was Union the rest of the half as the Garnet Chargers scored seven of the last eight goals in the second quarter to take a commanding 14-7 lead into halftime. Sophomore Charlotte Taylor scored the lone Thoroughbreds goal during the stretch.
- At halftime, Union held a decisive 16-to-7 advantage on draws which resulted in a lopsided 24-to-10 shot attempts disparity.
- Coming out of intermission, Skidmore showed life with a pair of Hudner goals to cut the lead down to a manageable 15-9 with 11:05 to go in the third, but it ultimately proved to be the closest the comeback bid would get as the Thoroughbreds offense stalled out the rest of way, managing just two more goals from Lockwood and Schwartzman in the fourth quarter.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Hudner finished with four goals on seven shots-on-goal while also securing a draw control.
- Lockwood recorded a hat trick to go with a groundball.
- Schwartzman scored a pair of goals to put her at 99 career points.
