SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – A memorable 2025 season came to an end for the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team following a 14-4 defeat to Ithaca in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs hosted at Wachenheim Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds (8-7) fell behind early and never could get on track offensively as the Bombers (10-8) clicked on all cylinders by hitting multiple last second goals to control momentum, alongside winning the possession and turnover battle when the game still hung in the balance.
Despite the early postseason exit, the program made tremendous strides by posting a winning conference record and qualifying for the conference tournament for the first time under head coach
Joe Martin and since the 2011 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bombers struck first with a solo goal at the 11:00 mark, before Skidmore responded on a Caleb Lawson score off the dish from Charlie Schutta to tie things up at 1-1 with 9:31 on the clock.
- It was all Ithaca the rest of the half as the road team first closed out the first quarter with four unanswered, included a score with just four seconds on the clock, to take a 5-1 lead. In the second quarter, the Bombers again outscored the Thoroughbreds by a 5-1 margin that included a pair of goals in the final ten seconds to take a commanding 10-2 halftime lead.
- The Thoroughbreds lone score in the second period came off the stick of Andrew Meindl, who received the pass from Jon Byrne.
- In the third period, senior Ryan Connolly found the back of the net in solo fashion late in the quarter, but it was answered by a pair of Bomber goals to give Ithaca a 12-3 lead heading into the fourth.
- Skidmore found the back of the net once more in the fourth on a Jake Weiner shoot and score off the dish from Mike Aiello, while Ithaca scored twice more to take the 14-4 victory.
