Skidmore falls in non-league clash at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -  The Skidmore College softball team dropped a pair on the road at SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday. The Hawks blanked the Thoroughbreds, 6-0, in game one and claimed game two 7-1.
  • Both teams are 6-12 at the end of the day's action.
  • Junior Elle Harrison finished the afternoon 4-for-6 with a walk.

New Paltz 6, Skidmore 0
  • The only runs scored in the first four innings was when the hosts crossed three across the plate in the second highlighted by a Lauren Serrao two-RBI double.
  • Elle Harrison singled to lead off the fourth representing Skidmore's first hit but was thrown out trying to steal keeping New Paltz starter Sydney Waldon just one over the minimum.
  • Skidmore gunned down a runner at the plate in the fifth, but the hosts still scored a pair to push the advantage to five.
  • Natalie Mayne and Harrison singled with two outs in the sixth and both moved up on a passed ball. It was the only time Skidmore got anyone in scoring position as Waldon extinguished the threat with a groundout.
  • New Paltz completed the scoring with a single run in the sixth.
  • Waldon struck out eight in the three-hit shutout.

New Paltz 7, Skidmore 1
  • Skidmore scored the first run of the game in the top of the first with the help of three walks and a Harrison single.
  • Nate' Burley earned the RBI with a bases-loaded walk.
  • Skidmore threatened again in the second but came up empty despite loading the bases with one out. Erin Gibbons doubled to lead it off.
  • New Paltz executed a squeeze play in the second as the contest went on to remain tied at one apiece into the fourth.
  • Three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings for New Paltz was the difference. Back-to-back doubles set up the rally in the fourth as the Hawks put together five base hits in the frame.
  • Skidmore again threatened in the fifth using two walks and a hit batter again to load the bases with two outs, but couldn't cut into the deficit despite the pressure.
  • Kelsey O'Brien put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the fifth when she hit a two-out, bases-clearing double to make it 7-1.
  • Three New Paltz pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts. Leah Gunsett got the win with 3.2 innings of shutout relief. She surrendered just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts.
  • Harrison recorded her fourth-straight multi-hit game and reached base safely three times.
