TROY, NY – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse are officially headed to the Liberty League postseason for the first time since 2011, despite suffering a lopsided 22-7 lead at No. 5 RPI on Saturday afternoon.
With a last second victory by Ithaca against Clarkson, the Thoroughbreds (7-6, 3-3 Liberty League) is officially guaranteed no worse than a fifth-place finish in conference play and locked up the program's first playoff berth under head coach
Joe Martin.
Battling on the road against the national powerhouse Engineers (14-1, 5-1 Liberty League), the game got out of hand early as the home team built a sizable 9-1 lead after one quarter of play and entered halftime up 14-1 and never looked back.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first quarter, junior David Koffler scored the Thoroughbreds' lone goal of the half in solo fashion at the 7:38 mark.
- The Engineers entered halftime with a 14-1 lead after outshooting Skidmore by a 31-to-12 margin.
- In the third quarter, Skidmore scored four goals off the sticks of senior Brian Gonsalves, sophomore Jon Byrne and twice from freshman Mike Aiello.
- The Thoroughbreds closed out the game with a pair of fourth quarter goals scored by seniors Jimmy Gibbons and David Muti.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Aiello finished with a team-high two goals on three shots on goal.
- Sophomore Ethan Dicturel finished with a team-high three caused turnovers to go with a pair of groundballs.
- Junior Jude Avelino Jr. finished with a pair of caused turnovers and two groundballs.
UP NEXT
The Thoroughbreds will wrap up the regular season at home next Saturday at 1 PM against Ithaca. The game will serve as senior day. With a win and a St. Lawrence loss at RPI, Skidmore can finish as high as the three seed.
