Thoroughbreds withstand late Hobart rally for game two win and doubleheader split

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team held on for a 10-9 victory over visiting Hobart in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday to salvage a split with the Statesmen. Hobart won game one, 8-4.
  • Skidmore is 16-7-2 overall and 9-2 in the Liberty League; still in first place overall.
  • Hobart is 14-8 and 5-5.

Hobart 8, Skidmore 4
  • The contest was all tied at four in the seventh when the Statesmen scored twice and then added two more in the ninth to win by four.
  • Eddie Galvao accounted for three of the four Skidmore runs when he launched a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Thoroughbred starter Quinn Hocom pitched into and out of trouble in the top of the first. Two walks and a hit batter to the first three hitters loaded the bases with nobody out, but the junior right-hander struck out two and got out of it unscathed with a ground ball.
  • Hobart got two back in the third on an RBI double from Nate Johnson and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Jack Byrnes.
  • Quinn McDonald smoked one through the wind and over the right-field fence to lead off the bottom of the Skidmore third.
  • Hobart tied it in the fourth, and it stayed knotted at four until an infield error extended the inning in the top of the seventh giving way to a Jack Farnen two-run double.
  • The Statemen added two insurance runs in the ninth.
  • Skidmore brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth on three walks, but Hobart reliever Nicholas Francheschi induced an infield pop out to complete the two-inning save.
  • For Skidmore, Ethan Barnett provided four innings of relief. He surrendered two unearned runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
  • Skidmore put on the pressure in most innings, but Hobart used four timely ground-ball double plays in the first six innings to stay in it before winning it late.

Skidmore 10, Hobart 9
  • Hobart scored five times on six hits in the top of the ninth inning, but Nick Palovich came in to get the final two outs and leave both the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
  • The Thoroughbreds used solo homers from Sam Kornet and Mac Cady on the way to a 5-2 lead through four innings.
  • The lead expanded to 9-2 and 10-4 after Skidmore plated seven unanswered from the third through sixth inning.
  • Chase Siegel was sharp again for Skidmore to improve to 6-0 on the year. He made it into the seventh inning allowing four runs on eight hits with one walk and five strike outs.
  • Cady, in addition to his homer, hit a two-run single in the sixth to finish with a game-high three RBI on a 3-for-3 outing with two runs scored.
  • Sam Kornet was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, and Quinn McDonald finished 2-for-5 with two runs and one driven in.
  • Galvao added two more hits including a double.
  • Owen Sanders drove in four runs for the visitors.
  • Hobart's runs were scored by nine different players as four Statesmen pinch hitters combined to go 3-for-4 to catapult the ninth-inning rally.
