Skidmore falls 3-2 to Norwich in NEHC Semifinal

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team lost to Norwich University 3-2 on Saturday night in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Semifinal played at Hobart.
  • Skidmore finishes its season 14-13 after making its fourth straight conference semifinal game.
  • Norwich (15-9-3) is off to the title game Sunday against host and top-ranked Hobart.
  • Skidmore had leads in the game of 1-0 and 2-1 before Norwich scored its second and third goals both on the power play and held the lead to advance to the championship game for the first time in five years.
  • Norwich converted twice in four power play opportunities.
  • Skidmore did not have a power play in the game.
  • Both Norwich penalties were coincidental.
  • The fourth line put the Thoroughbreds ahead early. On a washed out delayed icing, Ethan Heidepriem forced a turnover behind the Norwich net and quickly got the puck to Kevin Urquhart and then finally across to Scott Lagos for a tap-in into the wide open Norwich net.
  • Both teams had multiple scoring chances in the first period but Skidmore, thanks in part to a late 4-on-4 flurry, held a 16-8 shot advantage after 20.
  • The Thoroughbreds finished with a 40-31 shot on goal edge overall. Norwich's Sami Molu made 38 saves. Joshua Seeley had 28 for Skidmore.
  • Seeley kept the Cadets off the board with a breakaway save on Bryan O'Mara just over two minutes into the second period, but Norwich continued to press and finally cashed in on an extended stay in the offensive zone when Dave Overbeeke scored on his own rebound at the 3:42 mark knotting the game at one.
  • The Thoroughbreds turned up the pressure over most of the remainder of the period eventually forcing the Cadets to use their timeout with 5:49 remaining.
  • Right out of the breather, Skidmore kept play alive in the offensive zone and then Danny Magnuson walked around a Norwich defenseman before snapping a wrist shot past Molu putting the finishing touches on a highlight-reel goal to put Skidmore back up. Lagos assisted on the hold at the blue line.
  • Then, out of an officials' timeout, Norwich went to the power play where it found the equalizer again on its third extra-man chance of the night with 29 seconds remaining in the second period, and five seconds left on the penalty. Clark Kerner scored it on a one-timed blast from the top of the left faceoff circle.
  • Kerner finished with three points.
  • Norwich went to the power play one more time just before the four-minute mark of the third period and scored the go-ahead goal six seconds later on an O'Mara shot from the point through traffic.
  • Skidmore generated some chances down the stretch, including three looks from Cooper Rice in the same shift, but was unable to get another one past Molu.
  • Earlier in the day, host Hobart defeated challenger New England College in the other semifinal, 2-0, for its 51st straight home win.
