Thoroughbreds fall in overtime showdown against Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Battling in overtime for the second consecutive game, the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team came up just short, 12-11, after Vassar notched the game winner midway into the extra period on Wednesday evening.

Senior Jillian Lockwood had a standout five-goal, one-assist performance to help lead the Thoroughbreds (5-5, 2-2 Liberty League), which included scoring both goals in the fourth to send the match into overtime after the Brewers (7-1, 2-1 Liberty League) completed a furious second half swing to take multiple leads throughout the final period.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams scored three goals in the first period, with the Thoroughbreds receiving a score from sophomore Charlotte Taylor as well as a pair from Lockwood.
  • After the Brewers scored a pair to counter a third Lockwood goal and take a 5-4 lead at the 12:42 mark of the second, Skidmore responded by recording the final four goals of the half off the sticks from sophomore Phoebe Ross, freshman Hillary Noble and twice from junior Lily Hudner to enter halftime up 8-5.
  • However, Vassar came out firing in the third quarter by outscoring the Thoroughbreds by a 4-1 margin to tie the game up at 9-9. Junior Julia Cafasso scored the lone Skidmore goal in the period.
  • The Brewers completed the comeback with a solo score at the 13:10 mark to lead 10-9. Needing a response, Lockwood stepped up with her fourth score of the game to tie the game up with 5:43 remaining.
  • When Vassar again went up by a goal, the Skidmore senior didn't relent and scored her fifth goal of the game to make it an 11-11 game with 3:14 on the clock.
  • The Thoroughbreds had one final chance to win the game in regulation, with senior Lily Schwartzman generating a solid look at the net with 17 seconds remaining, but the shot sailed just right of the goal and the game entered overtime.
  • In the extra period, the Brewers scored the golden goal with 2:26 remaining on the clock to end the match.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Lockwood recorded her 100th career point early in the game before finishing with five goals, one assist and four draw controls.
  • Hudner scored twice and assisted on another while also recording two draws.
  • Noble finished with one goal, one assist and two groundballs.
  • Sophomore Maggie Hough finished with 11 saves, marking her third consecutive game with double-digit shots saved.
