Thoroughbreds put up 32 runs in blowout wins over Dean, Otterbein

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Skidmore College baseball team scored a combined 32 runs on Friday in lopsided wins over Dean College (17-3) and Otterbein University (15-5).
  • Skidmore (5-3-1) plated five runs in the first and eight in the sixth in the 17-3 victory over Dean. Then, after the game was 2-2 through seven innings, the Thoroughbreds put up a 13-spot on Otterbein in the top of the eighth inning to win it 15-5 and pick up the split doubleheader sweep.
 
Skidmore 17, Dean 3 (7 inn.)
  • Skidmore scored five times in the first and two in the second to almost immediately put the game out of reach.
  • Zachary Leiderman opened it up with a two-run double high off the wall in left field at the spacious Terry Park "stadium" field.
  • One batter later, Ewen Donald also doubled in two and came around later on a wild pitch.
  • Trey Bourque singled in a run in the second and Sam Kornet hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0.
  • Dean scored twice in the fourth, but they were the only runs Skidmore starter Ethan Barnett allowed. He went six innings surrendering five hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
  • EJ Stefanelli ripped a two-run single in the fifth to make it 9-2.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored eight times in the sixth aided by six walks and two hit-by-pitches.
  • Stefanelli and Donald both drove in three runs in the game.
 
Skidmore 15, Otterbein 5
  • Tied at two in the top of the eighth, Eddie Galvao hit a go-ahead two-run home run to launch a 13-run Skidmore rally to break it open.
  • The colossal inning saw 13 straight batters reach base. Donald and Landon Schwartzman both had two-run doubles and Bourque crushed a bases-clearing triple to dead center field.
  • There was no score through four innings as both starting pitchers were
  • Skidmore took the lead in the fifth. Back-to-back singles from Leiderman and Kornet loaded the bases with one out. Donald drove in a run on a fielder's choice when Otterbein was unable to complete the double play.
  • Otterbein answered with two in the bottom half of the inning. Daniel Hull hit an RBI triple and scored on an infield throwing error.
  • Skidmore tied it up in the top half of the sixth. Tyler Chenevert singled and moved to second on a Galvao sacrifice bunt. Then, Stefanelli doubled to bring around the equalizer.
  • Chase Siegel turned in a quality start for Skidmore. He allowed just one earned run over seven innings with a walk and seven strikeouts to pick up his second win of the year.
  • Bourque drove in four runs and Donald knocked in three to finish the day with six RBI. Six different Thoroughbreds came across the plate twice.
