Cafasso records game winner to lift Thoroughbreds past Marymount

CLEARWATER, FL – A clutch go-ahead score from junior Julia Cafasso in the final minute propelled the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team past Marymount for a dramatic 13-12 victory to wrap up a competitive two-game spring break trip in Florida on Wednesday morning.

Trailing by three scores heading into the final quarter of play, the Thoroughbreds (3-3) rallied with six fourth quarter goals and the game-sealing draw control from sophomore Charlotte Taylor following Cafasso's go-ahead goal to slam the door on the Saints (5-2) and record the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds got the scoring started with a goal from senior Elizabeth Walsh on the assist by sophomore Phoebe Ross at the 10:22 mark of the first.
  • After Marymount responded with three-straight goals to go up by 3-1, Cafasso responded with her first goal of the morning with five seconds left in the period to cut the deficit down to one score.
  • Winning the draw to kick off the second quarter, Skidmore struck again in the opening seconds on a solo score from junior Grace deBenedictis to tie the game up at 3-3 at the 14:29 mark.
  • However, the Saints responded by retaking the lead after four consecutive goals to take a 7-3 advantage with 5:27 to go in the half.
  • Skidmore closed out the half with goals by junior Allison Brewer and Walsh to make it an 8-5 game entering intermission.
  • Both teams notched a pair of goals in the third quarter, with Taylor scoring in solo fashion at the 9:19 mark and Cafasso scoring her second of the game at the 4:06 mark as the Thoroughbreds entered the fourth facing a 10-7 deficit.
  • Needing a quick start to the fourth quarter to get back into the game, Skidmore got just that by scoring four goals, and allowing just one, to tie the game up at 11-11 at the 5:54 mark. Brewer and Cafasso each scored a pair to lead the Thoroughbreds in the stretch.
  • The Thoroughbreds continued by retaking the lead with 4:26 on the clock after a solo score from deBenedictis to take a 12-11 lead.
  • After Marymount tied things even with a man-up goal at the 3:41 mark, Skidmore would retake the lead for good Cafasso's fifth goal of the game off the assist from Ross with 1:01 to go. Taylor would win the ensuing draw control to help the Thoroughbreds run out the clock.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Cafasso finished with five goals, three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
  • Brewer recorded a hat trick on four shots-on-goal.
  • deBenedictis and Walsh each notched a pair of goals to go with five combined groundballs.
  • Ross again led the team with a game-high four assists.
