Skidmore downed by Washington (MD) in low-scoring road battle

CHESTERTOWN, MD – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team fell in a low-scoring 8-6 match against Washington College (MD) to kick off a three-game road trip on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the final score, the Thoroughbreds (2-3) in fact held the upper hand on multiple key stats such as outshooting the Shoremen (5-2) by a 42-35 margin, winning 12-of-18 faceoffs and picking up 12 more groundballs with 39 as a team. However, self-inflicted wounds in the form of 25 turnovers, a couple of which occurred late in the game, proved to be the difference maker in the narrow defeat on the road.

With his seventh of an impressive 11-save afternoon, senior goalie Collin Kuester registered career save number 400 to become only the fourth Thoroughbred in program history to achieve the feat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Tim Blue got on the board with the first goal of the game for the Thoroughbreds on a solo goal at the 11:03 mark in the first quarter.
  • After the Shoremen responded with a pair of goals to take their first lead of the game to close out the first quarter, Skidmore senior Jon Bouvier fired back with an unassisted goal to kick off the second quarter and tying the game at 2-2 with 11:52 left in the half.
  • Each team would score once more in the period, with Washington scoring a goal in the 2:04 to take a 3-2 lead, before freshman Mike Aiello of Skidmore tied the game 30 seconds later with an unassisted goal to head into intermission tied at 3-3.
  • In the third quarter, the Shoremen started out hot with a pair of scores to take a 5-3 lead at the 6:27 mark. The Thoroughbreds responded, however, with two-unanswered scores of their own to tie things up at 5-5 with 3:28 on the clock after goals from sophomores Jack Holmes and Henry Salyer.
  • Closing out the quarter strong, Washington scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes to put the Thoroughbreds in a two-goal deficit entering the final period of play.
  • Neither team found the back of the net through nearly the first 11 minutes of the fourth quarter until Aiello notched a man-up score at the 4:14 mark to pull Skidmore within one score.
  • Quickly regaining possession of the ball and with an opportunity to tie, the Thoroughbreds had an unfortunate pass that was picked off by the Shoremen, who took it coast to coast for the immediate score to go up 8-6 at the 2:57 mark, which ultimately proved to seal the game for good for the home game.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
