SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team secured the first victory of the 2025 season with a wire-to-wire 13-6 victory over SUNY New Paltz at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.
Led by a trio of hat-trick scorers, the Thoroughbreds (1-2) started out hot by quickly taking a 4-1 advantage after the first period, before controlling the game throughout by successfully converting on all six free-position shots generated against the Hawks (0-1) to cruise to the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Allison Brewer kicked off the scoring with a free-position goal at the 12:17 mark of the first quarter. Moments later, senior Elizabeth Walsh followed up with an unassisted score of her own with 10:57 to go to put Skidmore up 2-0.
- Following a New Paltz score that cut the lead in half, sophomore Phoebe Ross connected with Brewer to put the Thoroughbreds once again up by a pair of goals with 4:31 remaining.
- Closing out the quarter strong, senior Lily Schwartzman found the back of the net with 17 seconds remaining to give Skidmore a commanding 4-1 lead after one period of play.
- The Hawks struck first in a low-scoring second quarter by capitalizing on a free-position goal at the 9:03 mark. The goal was matched later on by freshman Keara Battagliese, who notched her first career goal at the 2:37 mark to put the Thoroughbreds up 5-2 entering the half.
- It was all Skidmore in the third quarter, as the home team scored all four goals of the period to go up 9-2. The first three goals all came on successful free position shots by junior Grace deBenedictis, Walsh and sophomore Charlotte Taylor. Brewer also completed her hat trick by scoring the fourth goal of the quarter.
- Early in the fourth period, the Thoroughbreds pushed the lead up to 10 runs after Schwartzman was assisted by Brewer and Ross for her hat trick, followed by Walsh's third goal on a free position shot to go up by 12-2 at the 8:58 mark and essentially seal the win.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- With yet another three-goal performance, Schwartzman now has a team-best 11 goals scored in the young season.
- Walsh finished with three goals, two draw controls, one caused turnover and a groundball.
- To go with her hat trick, Brewer also recorded an assist and one caused turnover.
- Freshmen Hillary Noble and Battagliese each scored their first collegiate goal, with the former also securing a team-high four draw controls alongside a groundball.
- Taylor recorded one goal to go with three draw controls, one groundball and one caused turnover.
- Ross finished with a team-high two assists.
- Sophomore Tessa Snyder made plays defensively after causing a team-best three Hawks turnovers.
