TROY, NY – Opening the season in a neutral-site matchup, the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team fell short against SUNY Cortland, 9-13, while competing at Renwyck field on the campus of RPI on Sunday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds (0-1) carried a narrow 6-5 into intermission following a combined five-goal first half from the senior duo of
Lily Schwartzman and
Jillian Lockwood, before a game-shifting 5-1 third quarter run from the Red Dragons (1-0) proved to be too much to overcome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Thoroughbreds struck first on an unassisted goal from Schwartzman in the opening minute of the game.
- After Cortland took the lead with two unanswered goals, Lockwood tied things up with an unassisted goal of her goal, which was followed up by Schwartzman finding the back of the net for the second time in the quarter via an assist by sophomore Charlotte Taylor to retake the lead, 3-2, at the 4:55 mark.
- The Red Dragons closed out the quarter with two unanswered goals, and tacked on an additional score in the 8:52 mark of the second period to take a 5-3 lead.
- Heading into intermission, Skidmore closed out the first half of action strong by scoring a trio of goals in the final 3:30 to retake a 6-5 lead. Schwartzman got things started with her third goal to complete a first half hat trick, before sophomore Phoebe Ross was assisted by fellow sophomore Hannah Nash to tie things even. Lockwood scored the final goal in a man-up fashion with just seconds remaining.
- Coming out of halftime, the Red Dragons scored the first two goals to take a 7-6 lead, before Lockwood scored her second free position goal to once again tie the game up with 11:04 left in the third period.
- However, Cortland would begin to pull away after scoring the final three goals of the period to take a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth.
- In the fourth, junior Julia Cafasso cut into the deficit with a free position goal of her own to make it a two-goal game with 9:00 remaining. But that proved the closest the Thoroughbreds could get in their comeback bid as the Red Dragons responded with three-straight to balloon the lead to 13-8 with 3:58 to go.
