BOSTON, MA – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team kicked off the 2025 season with a dominant offensive display in the second half to cruise past Wentworth for the 18-7 road victory on Saturday afternoon.
Led by four total goals from senior
Brian Gonsalves and a hat trick from junior
Caleb Lawson, the Thoroughbreds (1-0) overcame a 5-4 halftime deficit by outscoring the Leopards (1-1) by a lopsided 14-2 margin in the final two quarters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Thoroughbreds had the upper hand from the start, with a pair of early scores from Lawson and Gonsalves to jump out 2-0 at the 10:28 mark of the first quarter.
- However, Wentworth tied things even to close out the first with consecutive scores in the final two minutes.
- In the second period, Skidmore broke ties multiple times by going up 3-2 and 4-3 after goals from Gonsalves and senior Ryan Connolly, before Wentworth once again closed out the quarter with back-to-back scores to take the lead at intermission.
- Entering halftime, Skidmore outshot the Leopards 21-14 in the first half while generating a substantial 30-13 advantage in ground balls, but still trailed 5-4 due to stellar goalkeeping from Wentworth's goalie, who stopped 11 total shots in the first half.
- In the second half, the Thoroughbreds scored a pair of quick scores off the sticks of junior David Koffler and Lawson to go back up 6-5 at the 13:18 mark.
- Following an equalizing goal from the Leopards, Skidmore scored eight unanswered goals to pull away for good, 14-6, with 10:18 remaining in the fourth quarter. Six different Thoroughbreds pitched in during the scoring run, with Gonsalves and freshman Mike Aiello each scoring twice.
- Throughout the entire match, the Leopards struggled to efficiently clear against an aggressive Skidmore ride as the home team successfully cleared just 14-of-28 times, including 3-of-8 in both the first and fourth quarters of the game.
