Humienny sinks game-winner as Thoroughbreds clinch first round bye

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College men's soccer team wrapped up a historic regular season with a clutch 1-0 shutout victory over RIT at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.

Clinching the program's first-ever top-two seed – after receiving some help via a 3-0 Clarkson victory over Vassar – the Thoroughbreds (10-3-3, 6-2-1 Liberty League) came out firing from kickoff and never let up, outshooting the Tigers (6-6-4, 2-4-3 Liberty League) by a substantial 26-to-9 margin before finally breaking through with a Jacob Humienny game-winner in the 78th minute.

Also locking up the first 10-win season since the 2016 campaign, the program will host its first ever Liberty League semifinals game at Wachenheim Field next Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Tobias Catizone came out the gates firing by placing three shots-on-goal in the first half in the sixth, seventh and 31st minutes.
  • Humienny had a good look of his own in the 23rd minute that saved by the RIT keeper, while junior Colin Goodhines nearly snuck one past the goalie just before intermission in the 42nd minute.
  • Senior goalie Will Devall came up big several times throughout the first half, cutting off RIT crosses deep in the box to shut down potential scoring chances.
  • At halftime, the Thoroughbreds outshot RIT by a 12-to-5 margin.
  • In the opening moments of the second half, Skidmore had consecutive potential go-ahead goals from Goodhines and Catizone turned away by excellent goalkeeping from RIT's Dobbek.
  • Devall stepped up with a key save in the 60th minute to turn away RIT's best scoring chance of the half.
  • In the 78th minute, Humienny dribbled around a pair of Tigers defenders before firing past the RIT goalie from just outside the box to finally give the Thoroughbreds the lead.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Humienny's goal is his third on the season.
  • Devall finished with two saves to record his seventh career win and fourth shutout on the year.
  • Catizone led the team with a dozen shots, with five placed on goal.
  • Goodhines finished with four shots-on-goal.
