Thoroughbreds get by Sage in four sets

ALBANY, N.Y. — The Skidmore College volleyball team used a balanced attack and a 13-ace serving night to defeat Russell Sage, 3–1 (25–16, 25–21, 22–25, 25–18), Tuesday at Kahl Campus Center.
  • Senior middle Jazlin Chen hit .429 with 10 kills and two blocks, leading a fleet of five Thoroughbreds who finished with seven or more kills.
  • Sophomore outside Natalie Pedersen posted a team-high 12 kills, while junior setter Catriona Hoelperl steered the offense with 38 assists and a team-best four aces.
  • Sophomore libero Marlowe McIntyre anchored the back row with 15 digs and two aces.
  • First-year Chloe Heitman added nine kills and nine digs, while Maya Stolarz and Katy O'Connell each put down seven kills. Stolarz finished with four blocks, while O'Connell had five.
  • Hoelperl served the Thoroughbreds to a 4–0 lead out of the gate, then late aces from O'Connell and Athena Braverman stretched the margin to its most inflated number of 12. Heitman sealed it at 25–16 with her sixth kill of the frame.
  • McIntyre delivered back-to-back aces as Skidmore (10-9) flipped a one-point deficit into a 20–18 lead in the second. The hosts tied it with the next two before Skidmore raced to set point by rolling off the next four points and took the 2-0 lead thanks to a Sage (9-11) service error.
  • Skidmore raced to 5–0 behind two Hoelperl aces in set three, but a mid-set Sage surge and a late service run finished the frame for the hosts.
  • Isobel Streeper stacked consecutive aces for a 9–5 cushion in the deciding fourth set. Sage rallied to tie at 15 and again at 16 before the Thoroughbreds took command with four unanswered points as part of a 7-1 closing run that clinched the match.
  • Skidmore hit .180 as a team (49–26–128) and out-aced Sage 13–6.
  • Aniyah Kelley paced the hosts with a match-high 17 kills and a .531 swing percentage.
  • Skidmore has now defeated Sage in 12 straight head-to-head matches since 2016.
