Thoroughbreds hang on to beat Ithaca 2-1 for Hallenbeck’s 400th win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team scored twice in the first quarter and made it hold up for a 2-1 Liberty League victory over Ithaca on Sunday afternoon at Wagner Park. The win marked the 400th in the illustrious career of Skidmore head coach Beth Hallenbeck.
  • Hallenbeck is the sixth active head coach in Division III to reach the 400-win plateau. Skidmore's coach since 2001, 330 of her 400 wins have come while at the helm of the Thoroughbred program.
  • Junior Colby Paul netted the eventual winner, while sophomore Emma Houff added a goal and junior Nicole Sylvestri finished with four saves for Skidmore in the crucial conference victory.
  • The Thoroughbreds now have a firm grasp on a playoff spot. Skidmore is 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the league, currently tied with Ithaca (tiebreak in hand) for fifth and a half-game behind William Smith and Vassar. The top five get into the conference tournament.
  • The Bombers drop to 10-5 on the year.
  • Skidmore struck first at 4:52 of the opening quarter when Emma Houff tapped in off a penalty-corner sequence. Brooke Golden sent the ball into traffic, with Abby Ezickson shoveling the ball to Houff near the post for the contest's first goal.
  • Colby Paul doubled the advantage at 12:55, cleaning up her own rebound with a high finish. Paul's sixth of the season stood as the game-winner.
  • The Bombers turned up the pressure to end the opening period, including getting three straight penalty corners as the time expired. Skidmore blocked all three of the shot attempts.
  • Ithaca eventually cut the deficit to 2–1 at in the middle of the second quarter on an unassisted strike from Eliza Ballaro, but the Thoroughbreds' back line and Sylvestri closed the door.
  • Golden added a third-quarter defensive save on a Bomber corner.
  • The Thoroughbreds had to defend six corners over the final six minutes, including one as regulation expired. A Brooke Snider shot for the visitors was blocked and Skidmore was able to clear to clinch the victory.
  • Under sustained second-half pressure, Skidmore's defense weathered a 22–8 shots disadvantage and a 12–3 corner margin, including six fourth-quarter corners by Ithaca.
  • Ithaca, despite the heavy advantage in shot attempts, put just five shots on goal.
  • The Thoroughbreds fired seven of their eight shots on frame.
  • Maeve Clark had five saves in the effort for Ithaca. The goal scorer, Bellaro, led all players with five shots.
