Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Thoroughbreds shut out by William Smith, 2-0

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College women's soccer team fell, 2-0, to William Smith at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.

Dropping the first conference game on the season, the Thoroughbreds (4-3-4, 2-1-2 Liberty League) hung tough with the Herons (8-2-2, 4-1-0 Liberty League) for most of the contest, but missed scoring opportunities and conceding a pair of quick second-half goals proved to be the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds narrowly missed out on taking the early lead in the 22nd minute, after an unlucky sequence saw junior Ellianna Caporusso first hit the crossbar on her shot attempt before fellow Junior Abby Lewis followed up on the rebound by also hitting the left post.
  • Despite a scoreless first half on the stat sheet, both teams traded plenty of chances, with the Herons tallying 11 shots to Skidmore's eight. As such, both goalies stepped up with key saves, with senior goalie Avery Rogers making six first-half saves and Herons goalie Antonia Goerke stopping five shots in the half.
  • Coming out of halftime, William Smith quickly broke the deadlock on a solo goal from Ruth Hotaling in the 49th minute.
  • The Herons quickly doubled their lead in the 57th minute when Hotaling again found the back of the net, this time on an Olimpico goal scored directly from a corner kick to put Skidmore in a 2-0 deficit.
  • Skidmore generated several scoring chances the rest of the way, but none were placed on goal against a stout Herons defensive effort to close out the game.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Caporusso and Lewis both led the offense with three shots-on-goal.
