Tufts pulls away late to defeat Skidmore 65-54

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Tufts used a strong fourth quarter to secure a 65-54 win over the Skidmore College women's basketball team Sunday at the Williamson Sports Center.
  • Despite a fast start and a 16-15 lead after the first quarter, Skidmore (4-6) struggled to maintain momentum, particularly in the second period, where Tufts outscored the Thoroughbreds 15-8.
  • Cassie Davidson scored a team-high 13 points for Skidmore to go with four rebounds and two steals.
  • Madison Meyer led all players with five steals. She scored seven.
  • Sarah Chambers had nine points and five boards.
  • Sofia Gonzalez led Tufts with 15 points and dominated the boards, pulling down 15 rebounds for a double-double.
  • Monet Witherspoon added 12 points and four rebounds for the visitors, while Abi Stone provided a spark off the bench with 11 points in just under 16 minutes of play.
  • The Thoroughbreds, despite the slow second quarter, trailed by just six points at halftime (30-24) but battled back in the third, narrowing the gap to 46-43 heading into the final frame.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored four unanswered to begin the fourth quarter, all by Chambers, to briefly take a one-point lead. She hit a game-tying 3-pointer before making 1-of-2 from the line in Skidmore's next trip down.
  • The game had 13 lead changes and seven ties.
  • The Jumbos led by seven with 1:43 remaining when Andi Levitz converted a rare four-point play to pull the Thoroughbreds to within three. Levitz finished with seven points with a pair of made 3-pointers.
  • Claire Kolkhorst answered promptly with a 3-pointer of her own as Tufts (9-4) closed the game on a 16-11 run, sealing the victory with free throws and defensive stops.
  • Skidmore shot 24.2 percent from the field for the game, but made 16-of-22 (72.7 percent) at the free-throw line.
  • Tufts was just over 40 percent shooting as a team and made 15-of-18 (83.3 percent) at the line.
UP NEXT:
  • The Thoroughbreds have completed non-league play and will jump back into Liberty League competition next weekend on the road at Rensselaer and Union.
