Thoroughbreds hang on to defeat RPI 59-52

TROY, N.Y. — The Skidmore College women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and a stifling defense to earn a 59-52 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Liberty League action on Friday night at ECAV Arena.
  • Skidmore (5-6, 3-1 Liberty League) pulled away in the second half behind a strong defensive effort that forced 29 turnovers and collected 14 steals on the night.
  • After the hosts held a 15-10 lead at the end of the first, Skidmore dominated the second period, 17-7, to take a five-point lead into the break.
  • The Thoroughbreds then outscored RPI (8-3, 2-2) 32-30 in the final two quarters and survived a late Engineer surge to seal the win.
  • The Thoroughbreds led by as many as 13 with 1:11 to go in the third quarter before the Engineers scored the final six of the stanza to close to seven.
  • Skidmore briefly held a double-digit lead in the fourth before RPI chipped away and pulled all the way to within three points with under 30 seconds left.
  • Claudia Schneider and Becca Horger combined to go 4-for-4 at the free-throw line, part of 18 made free throws by Skidmore on the night, for the seven-point final margin.
  • It is the eighth time in a row that Skidmore has prevailed over Rensselaer, dating back to Jan. 2020.
  • Horger led Skidmore with 10 points, going 3-for-4 from the field and adding three steals.
  • Sarah Chambers also chipped in 10 points, hitting two 3-pointers, while also having three steals, two blocks, and four boards.
  • Schneider contributed nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Madison Meyer also scored nine with six rebounds and two assists.
  • Cassie Davidson scored all seven of her points from the line.
  • RPI was paced by Siena Smith, who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Callie Flynn, who added 14 points and seven boards.
  • Skidmore capitalized on turnovers, scoring 24 points off RPI's miscues.
  • RPI finished with a 36-24 edge in bench points.
