Thoroughbreds fall at Vassar in midweek league game

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Vassar College defeated the Skidmore College women's basketball team, 72-55, on Tuesday evening.
  • Claudia Schneider paced the Thoroughbred starters with 10 points, while Sophia Martinez contributed 11 points in 21 minutes off the bench to lead all Skidmore (6-9, 4-4 Liberty League) players.
  • Emmy Plage was active on the boards, pulling down eight rebounds to go with her five points and three steals. Cassie Davidson also had three steals and finished with seven points.
  • Sierra McDermed led Vassar (11-4, 7-1 Liberty League) with a game-high 30 points, shooting 11-for-19 from the field, including three 3-pointers, and a perfect 5-for-5 at the line.
  • Tova Gelb grabbed 15 rebounds alongside 14 points for a double-double.
  • Maddie Ahearn chipped in six points and two steals, while Julia Harvey added seven points off the bench for the hosts.
  • After being outscored 19-10 in the first, Skidmore found some rhythm in the second quarter, narrowing the gap with a 20-point effort, but the Brewers still led by seven at halftime.
  • The 20 points by Skidmore in the second was the most by either team in a single period. The Thoroughbreds shot 50 percent from the field with two 3-pointers and a 4-for-5 mark at the free-throw line.
  • Vassar's defense slowed Skidmore in the third quarter, holding it to just 11 points while extending the lead to double digits.
  • Vassar shot 47 percent from the field overall, including 39 percent from three-point range, while holding Skidmore to 35 percent shooting.
  • The Brewers outrebounded the Thoroughbreds 41-36 and outscored them in the paint 34-28.
  • The Thoroughbreds finished with a 25-13 edge in bench points.
  • Since Skidmore's win in the semifinal in 2023, Vassar has won five in a row against Skidmore including last season's championship.
