Stone secures hat trick as Thoroughbreds dominate Eastern Connecticut State, 3-1

MANSFIELD, CT – Led by a hat trick from senior Ella Stone, the Skidmore College women's soccer team generated defeated Eastern Connecticut State, 3-1, in an exciting offensive display on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (2-0-1) generated two quick goals in the first 20 minutes of the game, with both being sophomore Abby Lewis setting up Stone with stellar passes in the box, and never looked back as the green and yellow outshot the Warriors (1-2-0) 18-to-5 to command the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Getting Skidmore on the board early in the 16th minute, Lewis launched a pinpoint cross pass near the right corner that hit Stone right in front of the goal for a tap in score that snuck past the ECSU goalie. Sophomore Ellianna Caporusso also received a double assist for making the initial outlet pass to start the scoring sequence.
  • In the 19th minute, the duo of Lewis and Stone connected once again on a brilliant touch pass that hit a cutting Stone in stride for a goal that was just past the reach of the goalie.
  • The Warriors managed to get onto the scoreboard themselves in the opening seconds of the second half to quickly slash Skidmore's lead in half. Prior to the goal, the Thoroughbreds started the season without allowing a score in the first 225 minutes of action.
  • Following the sudden score, Skidmore's defense turned up the pressure, allowing just two total ECSU shot attempts in the remainder of the half.
  • In the 82nd minute, Stone completed her first career hat trick after finding the back of the net off a rebound from an initial Hazel Aiello shot attempt that was saved. The trifecta marked the first by a Thoroughbred since Emma Basso accomplished the feat against New England College in 2017.
