SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Facing a tough test against a nationally-ranked rival, the Skidmore College women's soccer team stood up to the challenge by shutting out an aggressive William Smith offense to ultimately force a scoreless tie at Wachenheim Field on Saturday.
The Thoroughbreds (6-0-2, 1-0-1 Liberty League) continues the program's best start to a season since the 2013 team started out 10-0-2 after relentlessly swarming the No. 12 Herons (5-2-2, 1-0-1 Liberty League) offense, which put up 13 shot attempts and seven corner kicks as a unit.
Junior goalie
Avery Rogers had a stellar performance anchoring the Skidmore defensive efforts, making several key saves at the net to finish with five on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- William Smith put pressure on the Thoroughbreds defense from the get go, by immediately generating a corner kick in the fourth minute and forcing Rogers to make a subsequent save on a shot attempt.
- Skidmore continued to keep pace with the William Smith offense in the first half, consistently punting the ball out of their defensive third, on top of Rogers making crucial diving saves in the 29th, 36th and 41st minutes when the Herons did break through.
- Offensively, Skidmore generated a couple of transition opportunities that pressured the William Smith defense, including a near go ahead play from sophomore Abby Lewis in the shooting box, but ultimately couldn't manage to break through.
- The Herons only managed to attempt four shots in the second half, with one lone shot on goal in the 74th minute being saved by Rogers.
- In the 82nd minute, junior Molly Cunningham launched Skidmore's lone shot of the game, which was saved by William Smith's goalie.
- The Thoroughbreds stalled out the final minutes of the match, preventing the Herons from getting any quality looks as the seconds ticked down to result in the third consecutive tie in a row between the two programs.
