POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The unbeaten start to the season continued for the Skidmore College women's soccer team after the program clutched out a major 2-1 conference road victory over host Vassar on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore star
Abby Lewis struck twice in the first half to guide the Thoroughbreds (7-0-2, 2-0-1 Liberty League) past a Brewers (7-2-2, 2-1-0 Liberty League) team that managed to outshoot them by an 18-to-11 margin. Despite the shot disparity, Skidmore goalie
Avery Rogers and the Thoroughbreds backline blanketed the home team by allowing just four shots on goal and making key defensive saves late that prevented the match from ending in a draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lewis' first goal of the match came in the just fifth minute after receiving a long hit-ahead pass from senior Ella Stone and maneuvering past Vassar's goalie, who went too far out from the goal in an attempt to play the pass.
- The Brewers managed to connect on the equalizer in the 24th minute, tying things up at one apiece.
- In the 35th, sophomore Hannah Fetzer ignited another brilliant scoring play after booting the ball into the shooting box to junior Molly Cunningham, who immediately touch passed it to a trailing Lewis for the go-ahead goal.
- Vassar had a golden equalizing opportunity in the 62nd minute that saw a Brewer receive the ball past the Skidmore backline and shooting the ball past the reach of Rogers, but managing to only hit the bottom right of the goal post and bouncing away from the goal.
- In the 90th minute, Vassar had a final chance to force a tie after receiving a free kick just outside the shooting box. Attempting the shot, Vassar's Riley McGrath sent the ball high and above Skidmore's defensive wall but was stopped by a leaping Rogers, who sealed the win for the Thoroughbreds with the brilliant play.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Lewis finished with her first career multi-goal performance
- Rogers finished three key saves for ninth career win as a Thoroughbred
