SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Senior
Ella Stone played hero on senior day, scoring the go-ahead 67th minute goal to lead the Skidmore College women's soccer team to a hard-earned 1-0 shutout victory over RPI on Saturday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds (8-0-2, 3-0-1 Liberty League) controlled the game from the get go by pressuring the Engineers (7-2-2, 2-1-1 Liberty League) defensive line with relentless attacks at the net and from generating corner opportunities, ultimately ending the match with a 23-to-10 shots disparity, and quadrupling in corners 8-to-2.
Following the game, the program honored its 2024 senior class of
Chloe Binder,
Ashley Downes,
Liz Foley,
Kyra Russman-Araya, Stone and
Abby Sturim.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Skidmore created multiple goal opportunities in the first half, putting up nine shots in the first 21 minutes alone. However, stellar defensive play at the net and unlucky bounces on the crossbar prevented the home team from breaking through.
- On the other end, junior goalie Avery Rogers made a pair of key diving stops to keep the Engineers from capitalizing on their couple of rare scoring chances.
- The Thoroughbreds entered halftime outshooting RPI by a 16-to-6 margin.
- Stone struck gold in the 67th minute of the second half after stringing together an array of moves to navigate her way into the middle of the RPI backlines, before launching a shot to the left side that evaded a diving effort from the Engineers goalie.
- In the 80th minute, sophomore Abby Lewis nearly hit on an insurance goal after finding herself in a breakaway fast break situation, but was stopped by the Engineers goalie who met her at the edge of the shooting box with a diving save.
- Looking to hold on for the win and avoid a tie, the Skidmore defense kept the Engineers from truly getting a solid shot attempt opportunity the rest of the way, with the road team only getting one off-target shot attempt up in the final minutes of the match.
